Talk By Dr. Prof. Dr. Miguel Andrade
On Wednesday, June 14, 2017, Dr. Prof. Dr. Miguel Andrade (Computational Biology and Data Mining group, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz) will give a talk in the context of the colloquium series of the CBI in SS 2017. The talk is entitled "Computational study of protein interaction networks" and will be held at the Center for Bioinformatics (CBI), building E2 1, lecture room 001, ground floor at 17:00 am.
Abstract:
We develop methods and databases to study protein interaction networks. I will present HIPPIE, a database of human protein interactions that are scored according to experimental evidence. Using these data we were able to propose a function of polyQ in the modulation of protein interactions. I will also introduce one of our recent lines of work that regards the study of the topological properties of PPI networks. The topologies of many networks, including the PPI network, can be modelled using hyperbolic geometry, a space whose mathematical properties naturally lead to the emergence of network scale invariance and strong clustering. We will be using such hyperbolic maps for the prediction of links between proteins and to study network evolution.
