How can I fulfil my "free" (i.e. uncategorized) credits?
For the bachelor there are 27 credits left which can be fulfilled freely by courses of any existing category (also by surplus credits from categories that are already fulfilled), as well as by the supervision of a course as a tutor (4 credits each), by English language courses (6 credits maximum) or by a traineeship in science or industry (14 credits) (§5 clause 1 study regulation, §18 clause 4 examination regulation).
For the Master, there are 13 credits left which can be fulfilled freely by courses of any existing category (also by surplus credits from categories that are already fulfilled), as well as by the supervision of a course as a tutor (4 credits each) (§6 clause 1 study regulation, §22 clause 2 examination regulation).
What happens to surplus credits?
If a student achieves more than 180 credits for the bachelor or more than 120 credits for the master, she or he can choose which of the achieved certificates are to be included in the diploma and furthermore request the conversion of a certificate that was graded with at least a "sufficient" (ausreichend) into a non-graded certificate, if all requirements regarding the minimum credits remain fulfilled. (§6 clause 12.1).
For which certificates must I register at the examination office?
In principle, all certificates that include an examination under the terms of § clause 3 must be registered. Therefore, according to §6 clause 2, all courses, English language courses as well as traineeships must be registered two weeks before the examination in the examination office. For bachelor and master theses as well as for diploma theses ("Diplomarbeiten") there are special regulations in the examination regulation. The corresponding forms can be found here.
Which certificates can be taken into account to grant an "Honor's Degree"?
To grant an "Honor's Degree", only those certificates can be taken into account, that have been achieved during a Master's study enrollment. Certificates received during the Bachelor's study are impossible to be considered.
